ESPN Fantasy Football. Poking Around The App

Now that the draft is complete, we move into the weekly management of your team. There are two main management activities: roster changes and choosing your starting lineup.

The updated ESPN Fantasy Football App provides lots of data to help you manage your team. This brief article (a primmer as the British might say) aims to summarize the various areas on the app and point you in directions of beneficence.

Upon arrival in the app, your first matchup will be displayed. There are two key buttons just below that:

My Team

Matchup

Before we get into those buttons, it is worth noting the Weekly Rankings section, just below those buttons. This shows your current players and how they rank this week against others in the same position. Clicking See All opens up all sorts of options, including the ability to filter by position. Here is what the three color codes mean on those screens:

Blue means that the player is on an opponent’s team. You can click on the blue icon to proopse a trade to that team owner, for that player.

Red means that the player is on your team. Clicking the red icon allows you to drop that player.

Green means the player is a free agent. Clicking the green icon begins the process of adding that player to your roster (usually requiring you to drop someone else to make space.)

If there is no icon at all, this means it is your player and that you do not have the ability to drop him from your team. This applies to your first round pick only.

Click the My Team button

This shows your current roster and your starters. If you click the Quick Lineup button, ESPN will create what it thinks is your best starting lineup. It is the ideal lineup at the time you click the button. So, it will not automatically change the lineup if a player gets injured in practice or something.

Manually changing your lineup involves touching the button next to a player’s name. A new screen will then show you options for making changes. You can practice with this because any changes you make can be easily reversed.

When you are on My Team, you have some new menu options at the top. One of them, Matchup, does the exact same thing as if you had clicked Matchup on the opening screen. More on that later.

Players is the place to go look for players to add to your team. The default list shows unclaimed players only, with the green icons. If the player has a yellow icon, it just means that he was recently dropped by one of your opponents. This means he is on waivers and if you try to claim him, you have to wait a day or two to get him and you might lose out to someone else who has a stronger claim.

It could be helpful to show your current players on this list. To do that, click the filter icon (looks like a triangle formed by three lines.) Then click the switch to “Show My Team.”

League is a pretty cool place to explore. I particularly like Recent Activity, where I can see drops and adds that other teams have made.

The Matchup Screen

This shows your starters alongside your opponent’s (for that week) starters. You will probably have this screen open when games are underway. It shows fantasy point scores as the games progress. It also shows which of your players are on the field and even which ones are in the red zone. It shows the total score of the matchup between you and your opponent.

Note that you can scroll to the right and left to see how other league matchups are going.
