The Sun Dog by Stephen King

A Polaroid Sun 660 camera spews pictures of a fierce dog preparing to attack the photographer. This happens no matter what was supposed to be the real subject of the photo. Each frame brings the dog a step closer to bursting through the camera and into the unsuspecting world. This is the fun and scary premise of Stephen King’s novella “The Sun Dog”, found in the collection Four Past Midnight (1990).

The story uses a slightly more sophisticated voice than other King works. I liked that change, especially from the other three novellas in the collection. It’s ironic since part of The Sun Dog is told from the point of view of the youngest main character.

Between the voice and the cool premise, this is a very good story that only flags when the action is left entirely in the hands of the least savory character. Lucky for us, the good guys show up in the end. But will it matter if the dog gets loose?

    1. Among the four novellas in Four Past Midnight, only two have been made into movies or shows: The Langoliers and Secret Window, Secret Garden. The latter movie, just called Secret Window, starred Johnny Depp.

Anyway, the answer is that The Sun Dog has not been made into anything on screen.
