Songs About Telephones and Phone Calls

New York Times culture and music critic Lindsay Zoladz released her list of favorite songs about telephones on September 29, 2026. Here is the list:

“My Favorite Phone Songs” track list

  • Blondie, “Hanging on the Telephone”
  • Tommy Tutone, “867-5309/Jenny”
  • Erykah Badu, “Cel U Lar Device”
  • The Kinks, “Party Line”
  • Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, “Telephone”
  • R.E.M., “Star 69”
  • Chuck Berry, “Memphis, Tennessee”
  • Electric Light Orchestra, “Telephone Line”
  • Glen Campbell, “Wichita Lineman”
  • Jenny Lewis, “On the Line”

It’s the diverse list you might expect from a wisened culture critic. The Gen X kid in me is happy to see Tommy Tutone (my first album at age 10.)

Here’s Pablo’s Take:

Missing:

  • Blondie, “Call Me”
  • Carly Rae Jepsen, “Call Me Maybe”
  • Adele, “Hello”
  • Pink Floyd, “Young Lust”

That last one, Floyd’s Young Lust is famous for the missed connection at the end of the song, perhaps the turning point in The Wall. Pink is touring in the United States and tries to contact his wife in England, via the operator:

Hello?
Yes, a collect call for Mrs. Floyd from Mr. Floyd
Will you accept the charge from the United States?
Oh, he hung up
That’s your residence? I wonder why he hung up
Is there supposed to be someone else there besides your wife there to answer?
Hello?
This is the United States calling, are we reaching?
See, he keeps hanging up, and it’s a man answering

I also researched Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” because I remember references to a phone there. Turns out that “Just Dance” is about dancing away the pain of heartbreak. Gaga mentions early on that she has lost her phone somewhere on the dance floor. The lyric I thought was in there was “can’t hear my phone when you don’t call,” a poignant sort of double-negative. Turns out this gem appears in Gary Go’s excellent cover of “Just Dance.” Check it out below.

I also tested Bing’s new image creator. I asked for “1988 sad phone call where the person’s head is down.” The chuckle-worthy results are blow. Notice the AI’s background decor choices, the preponderance of feathered hair and the wacky phones with what appears to be a handset at the ear and another on the cradle.

The Ultimate Guide: When Acorns Is Worth It for You

Acorns is an app for investing small amounts automatically, and Acorns is worth it for many users. Its best-known feature, Round-Ups, tracks purchases on linked cards and invests the difference to the next dollar. If you spend $3.60, for example, it sets aside $0.40. Acorns transfers the accumulated amount from your checking account once it reaches $5. You can also set recurring investments. The money goes into a diversified portfolio of exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Some consider Acorns worth it. As of September 2026, Acorns lists three plans for new customers.

Additionally, this information helps assess if Acorns is worth it for beginners.

PlanMonthly feeMain additions
Bronze$4Investing, Round-Ups, retirement account, checking
Silver$8Adds emergency savings and more tools
Gold$12Adds features including investing accounts for children and more portfolio choices

Fees are locked in. Acorns says the monthly flat fee only changes if you adjust your subscription level; this shows Acorns might be worth it. I signed up for Bronze at $3 and still pay that price, despite a $1 increase in August 2026.

However, the big tradeoff with Acorns is the monthly fee when viewed as a percentage of the invested amount. Let’s look only at the Bronze level, since you can scale the numbers for Silver and Gold.

In short, whether Acorns is worth it depends on whether the fee share justifies the growth, along with the convenience.

If you have $500 invested, the $4 per month amounts to 9.6% of the total.

That percentage applies over one year.

Additionally, as your fund grows, the flat rate remains the same, effecting whether Acorns is worth it.

Amount InvestedFees Percentage for Bronze Level ($4/month)
$500.009.60%
$1,000.004.80%
$1,500.003.20%
$2,000.002.40%
$5,000.000.96%
$7,500.000.64%
$10,000.000.48%

I stretched it to $10,000 because AI says 0.5% of balance is a reasonable benchmark. Moreover, remember that your investments will grow because they are investments. If you have $1000 invested into an Acorns account that earns 7.5%, that’s $75 that cuts more than one year of fees.

Included in the fee are all investing and management expenses, making Acorns worth it. Additionally, you pick your risk tolerance, and they manage the funds for you. If they make trades on your behalf, there are no trade fees passed on.

So, what are the advantages and are they worth the fees? This is a great question. Keep in mind that the weight of the flat fee is heaviest early in your investing. At the Bronze level, the fees become competitive at $10,000 value.

  • Round Ups: The round ups allow you to make small investments in yourself at every transaction. It might be a little like paying a sales tax, except you are paying the tax to yourself.
  • Earn for Purchases: Acorns partners with over 450 vendors. If you buy from them (for example, score some pet food from Chewy or PetSmart,) you get a percentage back in your Acorns account. I noticed that Home Depot will deposit 4.5% of my purchase into my Acorns account. Alright! And when I order from HomeDepot.com, I can choose to just pick it up at my local store…
  • You can earn a large sum by referring other people to the app. My current referral bonus offer is $800 for referring three friends.

In evaluating if Acorns is worth it, the ease of using roundups matters. The ease of using roundups includes setting a monthly amount into the investment fund from your bank. That may be worth the fee. This helps you decide whether it fits your spending plan.

However, you can cut into that fee, or eliminate it, by using the app when you shop online. If I refer three people to this convenient app, I wipe out over 16 years of fees. Additionally, the potential savings depend on your online shopping habits.

The three steps for the person to earn the referral bonus are listed on the link. You need to invest at least $5 for at least 30 days and then if it is not for you, you can cancel and get the $5 (or whatever amount you invested) back.

Here is the link to sign up to help a referrer: https://www.acorns.com/share/?first_name=Yendersson&friend_reward=5&shareable_code=TZG8EHM

Thanks!

Surfy Plaza Construction Updates

May 6, 2026

Condo updates. Appears that siding has been installed throughout and painted in many areas. Battleship grey is a good choice as the place feels about as sturdy as an aircraft carrier. I parked below-decks because the crew was swabbing the parking lot deck with some sort of covering. Note in the photo the placement of the parking curbs. Could we be due for a layout change?

October 23, 2025

Paul reports from the coast. Arrived on Thursday. Tomas helped Paul get into the underground garage. The code is different than the most recent report. See Paul for details.

Carpet removed in exterior hallway. Worker on the porch until about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

It will rain a lot over the next two days. Someone put a carved head made from sea kelp on the steps near the beach. New window installed in the bedroom. It now might allow egress? They still need to put framing around it. Got any questions? Send them to Paul.
